What is speech pathology?

Speech pathology helps children communicate: to talk, understand, be understood and connect with the people around them. A speech therapist (in Australia, usually called a speech pathologist) works with children on everything from first words and clear speech sounds to following instructions, telling stories, joining in play and building the foundations for reading.

At Scribble, speech therapy for kids looks a lot like play. We use games, books, toys and your child’s favourite interests to practise new skills, so sessions feel relaxed and fun. We also coach parents and carers, because everyday moments (bath time, mealtimes, the drive to kinder) are where most communication happens. We value every way a child communicates, whether that’s spoken words, gestures, signs, pictures or a communication device.

We see children across Melbourne at our Werribee, Craigieburn, Moonee Ponds and Caroline Springs clinics, and we can also come to your child’s school, kinder or home, or meet via telehealth. Whether you have a clear concern or just a feeling that something isn’t quite right, our paediatric speech pathologists can help you understand where your child is at and what might help next.

Who it’s for: Toddlers through to teens, whether you have a specific concern or just want to check in on your child’s development.

How we help

What our speech pathology team helps with

Every child is different, so support is always tailored to your child and your family’s goals.

01

Talking and speech sounds

Some children are hard to understand because they leave off sounds or swap one sound for another. We use games, picture cards and silly sound play to practise tricky sounds, so your child can be understood more easily by family, friends and teachers.

02

Understanding and using language

This covers how children understand what’s said to them and how they put words together to share their ideas. We might build vocabulary through pretend play, practise following instructions in an obstacle course, or retell a favourite story together.

03

Social communication and play

Communication is about connecting, not just words. We support children to take turns, share attention, join in play and express themselves in ways that feel natural to them, always respecting their own communication style.

04

Stuttering and fluency

Stuttering is when the flow of speech is interrupted by repeated sounds, stretched sounds or blocks. We work gently with your child and family on strategies that can help talking feel easier, and on building your child’s confidence to say what they want to say.

05

Early literacy and pre-reading

Skills like rhyming, hearing the sounds in words and enjoying books lay the groundwork for reading and spelling. We use songs, word games and shared reading to build these foundations in a playful way.

06

Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC)

AAC means any way of communicating besides speech, such as signing, picture boards or a speech-generating device. We can help find a system that suits your child, and show family and educators how to use it every day. AAC supports communication and does not stop children from talking.

Is it time?

When to consider speech pathology

Every child develops at their own pace. These are general signs that a chat with us could help, not a checklist for a diagnosis.

  • Using fewer words than other children the same age
  • Being hard for family or unfamiliar people to understand
  • Getting frustrated when trying to get a message across
  • Finding it hard to follow instructions or answer questions
  • Repeating sounds or words, or getting “stuck” when talking
  • Having trouble joining in play or conversations with other children
  • Finding rhyming, letter sounds or early reading tricky
  • A teacher, educator or GP has mentioned a concern about talking or understanding

Our approach

The Scribble way

  • Play-based

Children learn best when they’re having fun. Sessions are built around games, toys and your child’s interests, so practice feels like play rather than work.

  • Family-centred

You know your child best. We set goals together and share simple strategies you can use during everyday routines at home.

  • Neurodiversity-affirming

We value every way of communicating: spoken words, signs, pictures or devices. Our focus is helping your child connect and be understood, not changing who they are.

  • Working as a team

Where it helps, our speech pathologists work alongside our occupational therapists and psychologists, and with your child’s kinder or school.

Getting started

What sessions look like

  1. 1

    Get in touch

Contact us or send a referral. We’ll have a chat about your concerns and help you choose a clinic, home, school, kinder or telehealth option that suits your family.

  2. 2

    Initial assessment

Your speech pathologist gets to know your child through play and some structured activities, and talks with you about your child’s communication at home.

  3. 3

    Goals and a plan together

We share what we noticed in plain language and agree on goals that matter to your child and family.

  4. 4

    Regular sessions and reviews

Sessions build skills through play, and we give you simple ideas to try at home. We check in on progress along the way and adjust the plan as your child grows.

Working together

Support that fits your child’s world

  • We coach parents and carers so new skills can be practised in everyday moments at home.
  • With your permission, we can share strategies with your child’s kinder or school teachers and visit the classroom where helpful.
  • We can link in with your GP or paediatrician and share updates on your child’s progress.
  • Our speech pathologists work closely with Scribble’s occupational therapists and psychologists when a child sees more than one of us.
