What is a child assessment?

A child assessment is a structured way of understanding how your child is developing: their strengths, how they learn and communicate, and where they may need support. At Scribble, assessments can look at autism, ADHD, cognitive and learning skills, speech and language, motor and sensory skills, and everyday functioning.

Depending on the question you’d like answered, an assessment may include talking with you about your child’s development, observing your child, play-based and structured activities, questionnaires, and information from kinder or school. Afterwards, we meet with you to talk through what we found in plain language, and provide a written report with practical recommendations. We explain each step before we begin, and we adapt activities and take breaks so your child feels as comfortable as possible.

Families across Melbourne come to us for autism assessments, ADHD assessments and other developmental assessments at our Werribee, Craigieburn, Moonee Ponds and Caroline Springs clinics. Some parts of an assessment may also happen at school, kinder, home or via telehealth where suitable. Whatever the outcome, the aim is the same: a clearer picture of your child that can help guide support at home, at school and in any funding applications.

Who it’s for: Families who’d like a clearer picture of how their child is developing, to guide support, access funding, or simply understand their child better.

How we help

What our assessments cover

Every child is different, so support is always tailored to your child and your family’s goals.

01

Autism assessments

An autism assessment looks at how your child communicates, socialises, plays and experiences the world, including sensory differences. It usually involves several sessions, including talking with you and observing your child. We focus on understanding your child’s strengths as well as their support needs.

02

ADHD assessments

An ADHD assessment explores your child’s attention, activity levels, impulse control and how these affect everyday life. We gather information from you, your child and their kinder or school, often using questionnaires alongside observation and conversation.

03

Cognitive and learning assessments

These assessments look at how your child thinks, reasons, remembers and learns. The results can help explain why some tasks feel harder than others, and point to practical strategies for home and the classroom.

04

Speech, language and communication assessments

A speech pathologist looks at your child’s speech sounds, understanding and use of language, social communication and early literacy. Much of this happens through play, picture activities and conversation.

05

Occupational therapy and sensory assessments

An occupational therapist looks at your child’s fine and gross motor skills, sensory preferences, self-care and participation in daily routines. This helps explain what’s behind everyday challenges and what supports may help.

06

Developmental and functional assessments

These assessments give a broad picture of your child’s development and how they manage day-to-day activities. The information can help you plan support and may be useful when applying for funding such as the NDIS.

Is it time?

When to consider assessments

Every child develops at their own pace. These are general signs that a chat with us could help, not a checklist for a diagnosis.

  • You’ve noticed differences in how your child talks, plays, moves or connects with others
  • You’d like to understand why some things feel harder for your child
  • A teacher, educator, GP or paediatrician has suggested an assessment
  • Your child is finding learning, attention or friendships challenging at school
  • Your child has strong sensory reactions that affect everyday life
  • You’re looking for information to guide support at home or school
  • You need a clearer picture of your child’s needs to help with funding applications

Our approach

The Scribble way

  • Strengths-based

An assessment is about more than challenges. We look closely at what your child does well and what they enjoy, and include this in our findings.

  • Child-friendly

We use play and relaxed activities wherever we can, take breaks when needed, and adapt the process so your child feels comfortable.

  • Clear and family-centred

We explain each step before we begin, listen to your observations, and share our findings in plain language, with time for your questions.

  • Working as a team

Where it helps, assessments draw on more than one discipline (speech pathology, occupational therapy and psychology) for a fuller picture of your child.

Getting started

How an assessment works

  1. 1

    Get in touch

Contact us or send a referral. We’ll talk about your questions and concerns and help work out which assessment is the right fit.

  2. 2

    Assessment sessions

Depending on the assessment, this may include an interview with you, sessions with your child, questionnaires, and information from kinder or school. We’ll explain what’s involved before we start.

  3. 3

    Feedback session

We meet with you to talk through the findings in plain language, answer your questions and discuss what they may mean for your child.

  4. 4

    Report and next steps

You receive a written report with practical recommendations. We can help you use it to plan support at home, kinder or school, and with funding applications.

Working together

Support that fits your child’s world

  • With your permission, we can gather information from your child’s kinder or school so the assessment reflects your child’s whole day.
  • We can share findings with your GP or paediatrician to support your child’s ongoing care.
  • Recommendations can be shared with teachers and educators to help guide support in the classroom.
  • If therapy is recommended, our speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists can work together on the next steps.
