What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy helps children with the everyday “occupations” of childhood: playing, learning, looking after themselves and taking part at home, kinder and school. A child OT looks at the skills behind these activities, such as hand strength and coordination, body awareness, sensory processing, planning and regulation.

Paediatric occupational therapy at Scribble is play-based and practical. Your child might climb, swing, build, draw, cut, thread or cook during a session, each activity chosen to build the skills they need for things like handwriting, getting dressed, mealtimes or settling after a busy day. We work with you to find strategies that fit your family’s routines, and where it helps, we suggest simple changes to your child’s environment at home, kinder or school so everyday tasks feel more manageable.

We support children and families across Melbourne from our Werribee, Craigieburn, Moonee Ponds and Caroline Springs clinics, and we can also come to you at school, kinder or home, or meet via telehealth. Whether your child finds some daily tasks tricky or you’d simply like advice, our occupational therapists can help you understand what’s going on and what might help.

Who it’s for: Children of all ages who need support with the practical, everyday things that matter to them and your family.

How we help

What our occupational therapy team helps with

Every child is different, so support is always tailored to your child and your family’s goals.

01

Fine motor skills and handwriting

Fine motor skills are the small movements of the hands and fingers used for drawing, cutting, buttons and writing. We build hand strength and control through play (think playdough, pegs, threading beads and craft) and support handwriting in a way that feels achievable.

02

Sensory processing and regulation

Some children are very sensitive to sounds, textures or movement, while others seek out lots of input. We help you understand your child’s sensory preferences and build calming or alerting activities into the day, so your child can feel settled and ready to join in.

03

Self-care: dressing, toileting and mealtimes

Everyday tasks like getting dressed, using the toilet, brushing teeth and eating can be tricky for some children. We break these tasks into small steps, use visual supports and practise in playful ways to build independence and confidence.

04

Coordination and gross motor skills

Gross motor skills are the bigger body movements used for running, jumping, climbing, catching and balancing. Using obstacle courses, ball games and movement play, we help children build strength, coordination and confidence to join in at the playground and in sport.

05

School readiness and participation

Starting or managing school involves lots of skills: sitting at a table, using scissors, following routines, unpacking a bag and managing a busy classroom. We work on these skills with your child and share practical ideas with teachers to help your child take part.

06

Play and daily routines

Play is how children learn and connect. We support children to explore new ways of playing, and help families shape morning, bedtime and other routines so they run more smoothly for everyone.

Is it time?

When to consider occupational therapy

Every child develops at their own pace. These are general signs that a chat with us could help, not a checklist for a diagnosis.

  • Finding it hard to hold a pencil, use scissors or draw
  • Avoiding or getting very upset by certain clothes, textures, noises or messy play
  • Seeking lots of movement, such as crashing, spinning or climbing on everything
  • Needing a lot of help with dressing, toileting or eating compared with other children the same age
  • Seeming clumsy, tiring quickly or avoiding playground or sporting activities
  • Having trouble settling, sleeping or calming down after big feelings
  • Finding it hard to follow classroom routines or keep up with written work
  • A teacher, educator or GP has suggested an occupational therapy check-in

Our approach

The Scribble way

  • Play-based

Children build skills best when they’re engaged and having fun. We turn therapy goals into games, movement and hands-on activities your child enjoys.

  • Family-centred

We focus on the everyday tasks that matter most to your child and family, and share strategies that fit into your real routines.

  • Neurodiversity-affirming

We respect each child’s sensory needs and ways of doing things. Often the answer is adjusting the environment or the task, not asking your child to change.

  • Working as a team

Our occupational therapists work alongside our speech pathologists and psychologists, and with educators, so strategies are consistent across your child’s day.

Getting started

What sessions look like

  1. 1

    Get in touch

Contact us or send a referral. We’ll talk about what’s happening for your child and find a clinic, home, school, kinder or telehealth option that suits you.

  2. 2

    Initial assessment

Your OT gets to know your child through play and hands-on activities, and talks with you about daily routines, sensory preferences and what’s working well.

  3. 3

    Goals and a plan together

We explain what we noticed in plain language and set practical goals together, focusing on the things that matter most in your child’s day.

  4. 4

    Regular sessions and home strategies

Sessions are active and play-based, with simple ideas to try at home, kinder or school. We review progress regularly and adjust the plan as your child grows.

Working together

Support that fits your child’s world

  • We share practical strategies with parents and carers that fit into everyday family routines.
  • With your permission, we can work with kinder and school teachers, sharing ideas for the classroom and visiting where helpful.
  • We can link in with your GP or paediatrician and keep them updated on your child’s progress.
  • Our OTs team up with Scribble’s speech pathologists and psychologists when your child sees more than one of us.
